"Now watcha wanna do is use a wide stance. Like this, yeah?" Zac said to the group of first-timers. They were right at the entrance to the Safari Zone, with the lush grassland and forests of the park stretching far to the North. "Like this?" asked one of the group. "Not bad Sandra, but twist that back foot a bit. There you go!"
Zac put down a bowl of name brand Poke-Bait. It wouldn't be as effective as his home made chow, but it was what the Pokemon here were used to. "Get ready everyone. Balls out! The first Pokemon will be here soon!"

The grass rustled and a group of dancing birds shuffled out into the clearing. "Here they come! Get those elbows up!" Zac called, and a tense hush fell. "Mr Ramsay, will the ball still work if I throw it upside down?" asked Gabe, breaking the silence. He was the youngest member of the group, and had only just started his Pokemon journey last month. "You know, that's a great question. How about you give it a go."
Gabe nodded, and as the Oricorio troupe approached he hurled the ball. Despite being held upside down it flew well and bonked into one of the little pink birds. Like the first arrow in a volley, the rest of the group threw their safari balls at the flock, a third of which disappeared in flashes of red light. The rest scattered, knocking over the food bowl.
"Great work everyone! Now, check for stragglers." No further Pokemon emerged from the grass. "Wonderful. All clear. Now go and get those captures!"

The group retrieved their balls, and reset for the next wave of Pokemon. Zac corrected a few stances, put out more of the chow, and gave some quick grip tips. "There are three popular grip styles for Pokeballs," he explained, holding one of the Safari Balls for demonstration. "Thumb Up, like Gabe here," he pointed to Gabe's thumb position on the ball, "which gives more power. Or Thumb Down, which gives more spin." Zac held up the ball and demonstrated the difference. "There is also what we call 'Flick-Grip', but that's more of an advanced grip. Maybe we can get to that later, but for now let's just focus on the Thumb Up and Thumb Down. I recommend sticking with whatever is most comfortable."
The grass shuddered, and a carton of Happiny toddled out. "Here we go everyone! Thumbs nice and strong. Throw when ready!"

    Balls flew every which-way. Some too early, some too late, and some even managing to strike their mark and catch the toddling Happiny. "There we go! You guys are really getting the hang of it now." Zac said, grinning at his group. "Now, next up we'll work on signaling. Everyone reach one hand out like this-"

    Zac was interrupted by a high screech as something entered the atmosphere at high speed. The blazing ball of rock hurtled towards them, its comet tail streaking behind it in a bloody smear. "Everyone into the forest!" Zac called, and he ran at the group, arms spread wide as he herded them into the trees, and away from the open field.

    The group ran with him, shouting and stumbling. Gabe tripped, and Zac picked up the boy, carrying him into the forest.

    Behind them the meteor made landfall, crashing into the soil with an anticlimactic THUD. Dirt clods and chunks of grass were thrown high into the air, and smoke rose from the impact site.
    "Everyone stay here. I'll check it out." Zac said. He approached the crater, peering over the knee-high lip to see what had landed. It was a Minior. "Come in a little too fast ay mate?" Zac asked. The creature's shell was already broken, presumably from the impact, and the red orb turned to look at him with wide, unsteady eyes. Zac's brow creased with concern. He took a step down into the crater, boots sizzling on the burnt soil. "You okay? What's got you all worked up?"

    The Minior kept spinning, eyeing the sky with wide, scared eyes, before turning back around and trying to burrow further into the soil. "You're safe here. It's safe here. I'll look after you, okay?" Zac said, reaching out a hand to touch the terrified Pokemon. It spun wildly, and with a crackling, grinding noise its rock shield reformed. With the shield back up it looked almost like it belonged in the hole. Natural camouflage. The Minior went still. Zac picked it up slowly. He could feel it shuddering, shivering in his arms. "Don't worry," he said again, whispering to the Pokemon. "You're safe now."

Zac looked up at the sky, which was bright and blue and free of terrors.

Zac returned to his group, who had remained patiently in the forest. They were crowded around a glowing horse, petting it gently and making soft crooning noises as some of them took photographs. The Ponyta seemed especially interested in one of the older ladies, and was nuzzling her leg, leaving smears of glitter on her cargo shorts. "Do I...catch it?" the woman asked, meeting Zac's eye and holding up one of the safari balls. "You can, but it looks like you've already befriended it, so no need to throw the ball. Just hold it out and the little beauty will probably come willingly."
The woman nodded, and held out the ball in the palm of her hands. She remained still, as if offering an apple to the creature. It looked at the safari ball, up to the woman, and then gently booped the ball with its nose, disappearing inside in a flash of pale red light.

"Great work everyone! Time to break for lunch," Zac said, heading back to the Warden's hut. "We'll take a 30 minute breather, and then head on out for an afternoon trip to the Eastern grasslands."
One of the women in the group screamed, and Zac spun to see what was wrong. She held her picnic basket open in disgust. Inside was a giant slug, gnawing on her sandwiches. "Noooo, I just wanted cute birds!" She complained, doing a little dance of unhappiness. "Can someone take it?"
"I'll deal with it, don't worry." said Zac, reaching into the basket to pick out the Shellos with both hands. It felt like a tennis shoe wrapped in salty boogers. "And don't worry about food. I brought some extra muesli bars just in case."
